Topic

In line with its geographical middle position, Dutch occupies a linguistic position ‘in between’ German and English, as the renowned Dutch linguist C.B. van Haeringen argued in 1956. The now well-established ‘Germanic Sandwich’-conferences  are dedicated to contrastive research on the genealogically related Germanic languages Dutch, German and English.

Like the previous editions in Berlin (2005), Sheffield (2008), Oldenburg (2010), Leuven (2013), Nottingham (2015), Münster (2017) and Amsterdam (2019), the 8th Germanic Sandwich’-conference in Cologne (17-18 March 2022) will focus on actual research comparing various aspects of these neighbouring languages.

At the Cologne congress, contrastive studies on divergences between Dutch, German and/or English from a synchronic as well as a diachronic point of view will be presented, covering the domains of phonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics.
Also studies from a language acquisition perspective and talks comparing the central Germanic languages with Afrikaans or Frisian are included in the programme.
